What are your travel plans for 2019?  Will you stay close to home or venture far away?

Each year as the new year rolls around we dream of all of the places we long to visit, but with each new place added to our list, the price tag can often shoot through the roof. Yikes!  This year we plan to approach travel plans with a strict budget in mind, which means, if the price isn’t right, we will not make the trip.  Travel is an amazing part of life and a valuable part of our lives, but this year, travel doesn’t have to end, we simply must be mindful about our spending.  Ways we have devised to keep the price low and the experiences high are as follows:

  1.  We will track the cost of flights and be flexible with our travel dates.  Flexibility often provides cheaper flights, so this year, we plan to go with the flow as much as possible despite work schedules and school schedules and if the prices are right, we will do our best to spread our wings and see new and other parts of the world.
  2. Picnic dinners – We aren’t a family that prides itself on fancy meals.  We are quite happy to dine in a hotel room eating sandwiches, fruits, veggies and snacks for dinner.  If we have access to a kitchen, cooking our own simple meals keeps prices low, bellies full and travel still a possibility.
  3. Staycations – We are a family that loves where we live. This year we purchased the three country museum pass, which allows access to hundreds of museums in Switzerland, France and Germany free of charge.  So far, we have visited four museums, all of which were child – friendly and quite captivating.
  4. Simple – We adore the Berghaus culture.  Cozy alpine lodges, bustling with hikers, serving up delicious meals in some pretty spectacular settings.  This year, our goal is to take the children to more mountain huts, hike often and witness more of Switzerland’s beauty.  Hiking is cheap, mountain huts are affordable and memorable and staying in Switzerland means no need to fly far, far away.

Any recommendations?  Have fun dreaming!

  1. My plans always include time spent in the mountains of Wyoming, with my parents in Arizona, and a trip to France to visit s-i-l and b-i-l. Of course, I’d love to go more places, but we’ll see how that all goes first. 🙂
